Charles river cleanup (2006-03-16)

There has been a giant step made towards cleaning the Charles river in Boston area up, as the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority has reached an agreement with federal authorities to reduce the amount of sewage and storm water runoff that flows into the river each year. The Charles river has been known as an extremely dirty one for a long time, and even there have been some improvements in the quality of water, it continues to register high bacteria counts after heavy rains. If the agreement is completely settled, there will be a 54-inch pipe activated under the river, which will divert millions of gallons of sewage and storm water runoff during heavy rains away from the river and directly to the Deer Island Sewage Treatment Plant.
